An Summary of Anne Stevenson's Poem The Victory

Anne Stevenson

" I thought you were my success /though you slice me just like a knife" (Stevenson 1-2)

The opening lines of Anne Stevenson's poem The Triumph set a tone

of conflict. This poem, at its surface area, expresses a mother's thoughts

on having a baby to a child. Stevenson describes the blended feelings many

mothers have upon the delivery of their initial born. The ultimate release

from pregnancy and birthing pains, in conjunction with the excitement of

bringing a live creature into this universe, at first seem to be a victory to

the new parent. The author continues on to confute the function as a victory.

Using words such as for example "antagonist" (5), "bruise" (6), and "scary"(13),

she shows the darker aspect of childbirth. The mom has felt her very own

life's blood flowing a stranger might live "The stains of your

glory bled from my veins." (6-8). That she sees her very own child as a

stranger is evident in lines nine and ten, where in fact the child is

described
